'Mios ro gach ràith a choltas'
A month before each season, its appearance comes
Roe deer are the smallest of the deer on Islay. They stay mainly on lower ground and can be seen mostly in woodland or on open ground near woods, so they can dart away at the first sign of danger. Roe deer are easy to identify: they are small and browny-red in summer, darker black-ish in the winter. The male deer has stumpy wee horns and both have a black nose and white moustache and chin. They 'bark' similar to the noise a large dog would make when alarmed. Moving VERY slowly downwind of them, you can get to within 30 feet for your photos.
