Seal spotting on Islay - common seal in foreground with a grey coloured seal in the backgound

A month before each season, its appearance comes

Common seals are easy to find on Islay, basking on a rock when there is the slightest glimmer of sunshine. The colouring can vary from grey or black (with spots) to almost ginger-tan. The spot patterns are unique to an individual and over time you get to recognise specific seals.
Grey seal numbers in the UK have doubled since 1960 so there should be plenty of animals for the visitor to see. They breed on Nave Island and can be seen on the shoreline at Loch Gruinart. The white fluffy pups when they are with their mum is an especially rewarding sight.
Islay ... always something new to see!
