The Brown Hare - standing on its hind legs in the winter snow

'Mios ro gach ràith a choltas'
A month before each season, its appearance comes

The Brown Hare is faster, more agile and generally heavier than the Rabbit (also resident on Islay). They prefer open ground like farmers' fields or open heath although in mountainous parts of Europe can be found up to 1500m in the hills. So you can expect to encounter them pretty well anywhere off the beaten track.
In March you can see the hares boxing but in reality this is not aggressive behaviour, its actuallty the females telling the males they are not interested in courtship.
Catching a hare would be difficult - it is the fastest land animal in the UK.
Islay ... always something new to see!
