A month before each season, its appearance comes

 

Barnies or Barnacle Geese (Branta Leucopsis) are present on Islay in good numbers from October til March. Before landing for the winter on Islay you can see them flying in large groups in a line making a typical 'yappy' goose noise as they go.

Watching Barnies go about their daily business and socialising can be quite intriguing. You can see large numbers of Barnacle Geese throughout Islay at all reserves and most places where they will not be disturbed by human activity.
