Common Toad one of the many amphibians and reptiles easily seen on Islay

'Mios ro gach ràith a choltas'
A month before each season, its appearance comes

The common Toad is easy to find on Islay with possibly Lochs nan Giol, Tallant and Conailbhe being the best areas to begin your search. You are also likely to see the Common Frog, and even the Common Lizard if 'get your eye in'.
Toads hibernate and come back to activity when the cold weather fall away in February/March. Its at this time that the toads migrate to their breeding pools, the same one year after year, and in the process cross roads where they can sometimes be seen in large numbers. Toads generally hide away in daytime preferring to come out to dine at night.
Islay ... always something new to see!
